getVIRTUALnow tour is on the move!

As posted here https://www.getvirtualnow.com/usevents/cityselect.aspx Microsoft's getVIRTAULnow conference, which debuted in Seattle on Sept,. 8, 2008, is on the move and coming to a city near you.

I went to the show in Seattle, and saw some pretty cool stuff in the hands-on-labs, and got to talk to some of the experts and partners. If you live within commuting distance to any of the 11 cities and towns, I recommend the trip.

And likely your company will pay the entrance fee--unless you work for my employer! :^).

Happy Sequencing!

 MDOP 2008 R2 blog

Not sure how much I am "allowed" to tell you here, so read this:

It makes for a great and exciting read...

 jetBlue rocks customer service

This is not a SoftGrid (App-V) post, but since it happened on my flight to the getVIRTUALnow launch event, it is worth mentioning here.

I flew to Sea-Tac from Boston on Saturday night Sept. 6.  Hurricane Hanna was making her way up the east coast (mostly as a Tropical Storm) and had delayed many flights.  The pilots that were flying me out of Boston were delayed in New Jersey.  An inconvenience, but only about an hour or so.  And a weather related inconvenience.  Not jetBlue's fault.

Today, I opened my email and found this from jetBlue:

JetBlue Airways Voucher

Dear Joe,

Thank you for jetting with JetBlue Airways on flight #497 from Boston on September 06, 2008.  We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused with your flight. As always, the safety of our customers is our first consideration. We appreciate that your plans are important and will continually strive to operate our aircraft safely and on time.

As part of our commitment to you and consistent with our Customer Bill of Rights, we have issued each customer on your flight a $25 JetBlue electronic Voucher. The Voucher is for you and is non-transferable. JetBlue Vouchers are valid for one year and can be applied towards airfare on JetBlue Airways reservations...

Keep in mind I did not complain about the delay (or even care).  This response from them over the weather related delay was unsolisited but welcome.

Will I fly them again?  36 channels of TV plus XM Satellite radio, and one of the only direct flights from Boston to Seattle.  Yeah I'll fly them again.  And the customer service displayed here is nice too!

Happy Sequencing!

Cool Stuff I played with at the getVirtualnow Launch

First of all, I am happy to report that the MDOP labs were very successful, and were written on the latest version of 4.5 (4.5.1478). If you've been to other conferences lately (Tech Ed, for example) you have seen the labs before, but not in the 4.5.1478 version.

Other cool stuff I got to play with:

TS RemoteApp: Using TS RemoteApp on Windows Server 2008, you can install an application on a server, and package the EXE as an RDP file.  When the user launches the RDP file, the application runs on his computer using RDP.  It is not quite the same as lanching an RDP session to the server, though.  There is no RDP window, just an application.

Why do I like this? We sequence lots of apps that turn out to be just icons to a network app.  The icon streams to the client.  When they launch the app, it is launching the app on the server.  TS RemoteApp is not much different, but you do not need any AppV infrastructure in place.

Citrix XenDesktop: There was a lab that used XenDesktop and Citrix Provisioning which allows the administrator to sort of stream OS's to the desktop, but not really.  Basically, in a high level overview, you can have a desktop computer with no hard drive, and still run an OS.  I'm telling you, it is cool.  PXE boot to the Citrix server, stream an OS, run it as if it were locally installed.

Hyper-V, Hyper-V, and more Hyper-V.  The more I see it and use it, the more I like it.  In an unrelated note, some of our labs required re-imaging the computers between attendees, and imageX worked very well to accomplish this.  And it was very quick.  Nice job.

Seando, JF, Kevin: It was a pleasure seeing you and talking with you.

Everyone else: Happy Sequencing!
